Xenogeneic chimeras provide new findings

  1. Until the 8-cell stage, fertilized embryos have the potential to differentiate into any type of organ.
  2. The blastocyst consists of an inner cell mass (ICM), which subsequently forms the fetus, and the trophoblast, which develops into placenta.
  3. Embryonic stem (ES) cells, which originate from the ICM, have the potential to differentiate into a wide range of organs and tissues, with the exception of placenta.
  4. Injection of rat-derived ES cells into mouse blastocysts can generate an interspecies chimeric animal that harbors cells of both rat and mouse origin.
